Ohio Graduation Test: SEOCEMS

Kids often ask why they need so much math and science. They want to know when they are ever going to use this information in jobs the get in the future. That is where SEOCEMS (Southeast Ohio Center Excellence in Mathematics and Science) comes in. Only 72.6 percent of the Ohio students scored proficient or above in Science and Math in the 2006 testing of the OGT. SEOCEMS hopes to increase these numbers. In the process improving test scores on the OGT.
SEOCEMS is funded by the Ohio Board of Regents and is a collaboration between Ohio University College of Education, The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College, Shawnee State University and The Coalition of Rurd and Appalachian Schools. There are six such programs throughout Ohio.
SEOCEMS is designed to improve high school Science education. Athens High School will soon be launching an online tutorial. The tutorial will give students the opportunity to work on very sophisticated homework problems. It will let them rework multi-step problems until they get the right answers. They will also get feedback immediately on whether they are answering the questions right.
SEOCEMS is going to be a very beneficial tutorial for students in helping them understand Math and Science and getting better grades on the OGT. Through SEOCEMS students will learn more and in the process understand why they need Math and Science knowledge in their future endeavors.
