4,251 of Ohio Seniors Failed One Section of the Ohio Graduation Test

OGT Practice Test
Give us your opinion about OGT testing.

Ohio high school students took the Ohio Graduation Test in March. This school year the seniors of 2007 are required to pass all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test in order to receive their diplomas. In Ohio 12,387 high school seniors took the Ohio Graduation Test in March. This was the last chance for the class of 2007 to pass all five sections of the OGT before the graduation commencements this year. Of the 8,956 who took the test, more than 72% failed one or more sections they took, 4,251 seniors failed just one test.

Ohio School Districts have the option to give a summer administration of the Ohio Graduation test, but they are not required to do so. It seems many of Ohio’s School district’s are allowing students to do another test during the summer. Although students have the option to take the OGT once more during the summer, most will still be precluded from commencement. Some schools are allowing students to walk with their classmates during commencement however.

Of the seniors who failed one section of the Ohio Graduation Test, some of them could have the alternative way to receive the diploma, but there are strict requirements for receiving that OGT-waiver. Another option is to obtain a GED which is a high school equivalency diploma.

I wish I would have found this website and particularly this article last week. Our granddaughter had the rug pulled out from under her 3 days after her final day as a senior and 3 days before commencement exercises. The principal of her school, who told her weeks ago that she just missed passing the science portion of the OGT in March, had also told her that she would graduate as long as she met certain requirements. He said she met every requirement except he needed to get recommendations from all of her teachers in science for the last 3 years. He also gave her a recommendation along with the guidance counselor. Then on May 31st her mother was called to the school and was told by the principal that he made a miscalculation on the GPA and that our granddaughter would not be able to participate in the graduation exercises. He was very upset and apologized for his mistake, however, the superintendent had no heart and said basically that rules are rules and there was nothing they could do...she will not graduate with her classmates! Needless to say, our family and our granddaughter was devestated! As of this writing, our time has run out. We had tried to figure out a way, in less than 48 hours to get them to overturn their decision and allow her and any other child to at least be able to participate in the commencement exercises and receive a handshake for their hard work put into 13 years (K-12) of school! That didn't happen. When I stumbled on this website and this article that said some schools would at least allow the seniors who didn't pass the OGT to participate in commencement exercises, I was beside myself! I commend those schools who had a heart because we know how important that activity is in our lives and it has been stripped from us! Had I known this 3 days ago, I would have driven to the school myself with this information in hand to plead our case one last time. We didn't have enough time to find a viable solution and we are all just sick over it. We pray that when our granddaughter takes the OGT one last time in July that she finally passes. Her school will not have a late summer or early fall graduation for those who were left out but who pass the test in July, but I will be looking for a school distict who will graciously allow her and any other "Child Left Behind" to participate in commencement exercises so that she and others can have a graduation day to remember! After our research, this whole thing has revealed that over 1 million seniors were left out of graduation day commencement exercises because of these state tests, whether or not the student had passed every grade or were even on the honor roll and it is shameful that this has happened in America in 2007!

My daughter was just faced with this same situation. She became pregnant at age 16. Went into premature labor at 33 weeks and was hospitalized with difficult labor and complications, but did not allow her school studies to lag behind. She was also diagnosed with Krohn's disease when she was 14. Through these personal difficulties she pressed forward. In her senior year, she was struggling with math and we appealed to math teacher and school officials in the middle of school year for intervention. This was the only subject that she needed help on. Her math teacher did not respond to any pleas for help via email or phone. As a result she did not pass math OGT. She completed all her required work and studies, and has received all credits. School board will not let her walk with rest of class even though she will be getting final OGT taken in less than two weeks. She is registered for college classes June 30. We have appealed to all local officials, state senator, governor, white house, and even press and media. School officials have ignored the fact that they have erred on their part, and refuse to let her walk!!
