Warren G Harding High School Commencement - OGT Stops Somes Plans of Graduation

Tonight is the graduation commencement for Warren G. Harding High School seniors in Ohio. Twenty-five of Warren’s seniors will not receive their diplomas tonight or be allowed to walk across the stage with their fellow classmates. The reason these students are not graduating is because they failed to pass the Ohio Graduation Test.

Some schools are allowing students to participate in the commencement ceremonies with their classmates and just not receive their diplomas. Other schools are allowing students to receive their diplomas if they only failed one section of the Ohio Graduation test by less than 10 points and met other requirements.

Warren G. Harding High School is not one of the schools allowing this to happen. The Board of Education is sticking to its OGT policy, saying students have ample opportunities to pass the exam before graduation.

‘‘The district has been extremely diligent in updating parents. These children who showed due diligence and have done what the district expected them to will graduate. Unfortunately, those that thought they could skirt by still won’t graduate. That’s something that you have earned. The board has always felt that it does everything in its power to get those students help,” board member Linda Metzendorf said.

Students have seven opportunities, starting their sophomore year, to pass the Ohio Graduation Test before commencement. Those who do not pass in time for graduation can retake the test during the summer and still graduate during a late summer or early fall ceremony.
