Withrow University High school in Cincinnati Ohio is rated “Excellent” by the Ohio State Department of Education. Withrow enrolls more than 700 students. More than 90 percent are African American, and about half are low income. They are “Excellent which is the top of the list of categories given to school. The other four ratings are; Effective, Continuous Improvement, Academic Watch, Academic Emergency.” The rating is based in part on outstanding test scores, such as the Ohio Graduation Test.
91% of Withrow’s 10th grade students passed the Ohio Graduation Test reading section, compared to 82 percent in Cincinnati and 78.4 percent in the other comparable Ohio districts.
95% of Withrow 10th graders passed the Ohio Graduation Test writing section (82 percent in the district and 79 percent in the other comparable districts).
84% of Withrow 10th graders passed math, (76 percent in the district and 66 percent in similar districts).
74% of Withrow sophomores passed science, (57 percent in district and 47 percent in comparable districts).
83% of Withrow sophomores passed social studies (71.4 percent in district and 61 percent in comparable districts).
Withrow Highschool also has strong attendance and graduation rates. Also Withrow High school students before graduating, must do 60 hours of community service, and complete a resume. Principal Johnson says “We want students ready for life, strong skills are important. So are the right attitudes about helping and working with others.” The methods Withrow uses in preparing students for The Ohio Graduation Test are working extremely well.
